V.I.P.s hang out with E.D.P.s

Today was V.I.P. Day at Louise White School.  For a little while, we had dads, moms, grandmas, aunts, brothers and an Annie hanging out with us.  We modeled for our guests how we practice math facts, and then we played math war, Buzz, and even gave Bizz Buzz a try.  The kids did well, and the guests were impressed!

Brittany took most of these and I took some; I'm not sure whose is whose:

Pictures, do we have pictures!

Thanks to Mia, Jessica, Chandler and Cristian, we have many photos from today's trip to the Elder Day Center.
Enjoy!

 Harold bowling.

Miss Vera.  Vera's a sharp dresser, always dressed fabulously when we visit!  Since I'm always in jeans and LWS wear, I do make sure to tell her I can dress up too.  She always says it's no matter, she's just glad we come to see them!

Watching Bozo Buckets and posing for a picture!

Spending some time listening to Clarence, a WW II veteran who was married for 65 years to his wife Gloria.

This blonde young lady was in my first 5th grade class!

Mr. Bender with two 4Sers.  Lauren told him his eyes were closed, I said it was because he was REALLY smiling!

Thank you to all the parents who walked along on this cold, blustery, but thankfully not rainy day:
Mrs. Kempiak, Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Schneider, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Bender, Mrs. DiVito and Mrs. Oakley!

CRAYFISH!

Usually, this blog is full of pictures of your 4S student, but on today's post your cuties are vying with some gruesome looking little critters from Mrs. Donat's class.  Emily found them quite photogenic when she took off with my camera for 4D first thing this morning for science.  Since I'm not in the room with them as they investigate, ask your fourth grader what's going on in these photos!

Structures of Life

Our 4S students are traveling to Mrs. Donat's room most mornings for the science unit Structures of Life.  Since I stay in my room with Mrs. Donat's students for my science unit, I thought I'd send my camera along to 4D with Emily, so you could see what your student is up to in science this quarter.

Didn't Emily do a great job of taking pictures for the blog?  Now, you can ask your student about each snapshot, and you'll get an idea of what's going on in science!

Chain of Books

This is the start of something big.  We don't have much in the way of Thanksgiving decor, so I decided we'd start a fall colors book chain.  For every book a 4Ser reads between now and Thanksgiving, a link will be added to the chain.
Check back to see how long it is week to week.  This is just one day's growth...

What a just right morning!

We finally made our first trip to the Elder Day Center today, and it was such fun.  After a brisk walk, we arrived as the clients were exercising. After dropping our stuff in one room, we headed into the gym to join them.

Then we walked laps in the gym--lots of physical activity today!

Slowly, the clients went across the hall for snacks, and a handful of 4S kids were asked to help pass out drinks and snacks while those left in the gym helped set the tables up for lunch.

After that, we all crossed the hall to hang out and chat.  Miss Holly asked the kids what they were dressing up for on Halloween, and the clients gave tips on some pranks they used to play!  Uh-oh, good thing we don't have streetcars any more, or some 4Sers would be in trouble on November 1!

For a first visit, it was just right, and the kids want to go back.

This shot was snapped as we crossed the Fox.  All 21 students were healthy enough to go, it didn't rain, and we had three great 4S parents (Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Oakley).  What a perfect morning!

YOUR Mount to Be Read

Yesterday was a teacher work day.  I got a firm handle on all of your report cards, and I got a tiny head start on the second quarter.

Your independent reading goals are all set, I just have to enter them into the computer.  Remember, you have three goals:  your point goal, your accuracy goal (85%), and your book level goal.  To meet all three, you will have to read 40 minutes a day at your level, and aim for 5/5 or 10/10 on every quiz.  We'll have an average of 20 minutes of reading time at school each day, and your homework is 20 minutes of reading EACH NIGHT.

This quarter, I'm also requiring you to read some different genres.  You are required to read one 398 book (fairy tale, folk tale or tall tale), one biography, and two non-biography non-fiction books (or more), all at your level.

But you know what? This won't be hard.  As I left school yesterday, I was walking through the LRC and remembering what I said about IT being your Mount to Be Read.  How exciting to think of all the stories and facts that one mountain holds!

Here's to a reading championship second quarter!  Let's all work to meet ALL our goals!
